Protect opportunities to rest
The American Kennel Club describes puppies as needing substantial sleep, often around 18–20 hours daily. This is general guidance; a puppy’s development, environment and behaviour matter.
Use a repeating routine
After waking, offer a toilet opportunity, then suitable food, gentle play or training and a calm rest opportunity. Let naps happen naturally. Avoid keeping a tired puppy awake to meet a schedule.
Night sleep is not one fixed target
Young puppies may need toilet breaks overnight. Do not use a calculator to decide how long to withhold a toilet break. Record separate sleep stretches when the puppy wakes rather than logging the entire night as uninterrupted sleep.
Record age accurately
Enter age in months for the calculator; note the exact birth date or weeks in the profile notes if useful. There is no reliable universal week-by-week sleep prescription, so the guide does not promise one.
Share a useful record
Include feeding times, toilet breaks, unusual behaviour and any medicines in notes. Export a week of observations before a vet visit, and show which days were fully observed.
Educational guidance, not a diagnosis. Stillness is not always sleep. Missing observations are not zero sleep.
