Cats sleep in many short stretches

Cats usually rest in repeated bouts rather than one human-style overnight block. Cats Protection explains that kittens and older cats tend to sleep more than adult cats. A quiet cat is not necessarily asleep.

Broad age references

The calculator uses 12–18 hours for adult cats and a wider 12–20-hour band for kittens and seniors. These are educational planning bands with substantial uncertainty, not veterinary cut-offs. Some kittens sleep beyond these bands.

Dawn and dusk activity

Activity around dawn and dusk can be normal. A cat waking at night does not automatically have a sleep problem. Record meals, play and environmental changes alongside the observed sleep intervals.

Indoor and outdoor observation

Outdoor hours may be unobserved. Leave those hours unknown instead of assuming the cat was asleep. Only mark a day complete if you can account for its full sleep periods, including naps.

Support comfortable rest

Offer undisturbed resting options away from noise and household conflict. Keep routines predictable and provide suitable play. Discuss a sudden change in energy, appetite or behaviour with a veterinarian.

Educational guidance, not a diagnosis. Stillness is not always sleep. Missing observations are not zero sleep.
