Your chronotype is your biological predisposition toward a particular sleep-wake pattern — largely genetic, and surprisingly stable across your adult life. The Lion/Bear/Wolf/Dolphin framework, developed by sleep physician Dr. Michael Breus, has become a popular and useful shorthand for understanding these differences.
🦁 Lion — The Early Riser
Roughly 15% of people. Wakes naturally before sunrise, most productive in the early morning, tends to feel sleepy by early evening. Lions are often high achievers who guard their morning hours fiercely and struggle with late social events.
🐻 Bear — The Solar-Aligned Majority
The most common chronotype, around 50% of the population. Follows the sun fairly closely — energy rises through the morning, dips after lunch, and winds down in the evening. Bears are generally the most compatible with standard 9-to-5 schedules.
🐺 Wolf — The Night Owl
Around 20% of people. Genuinely cannot fall asleep early — melatonin release is delayed by 2–3 hours compared to average. Peak creativity and focus arrive in the evening. Wolves often struggle with early obligations not from laziness but from genuine biological mismatch.
🐬 Dolphin — The Light Sleeper
Around 10% of people. Sleeps lightly and is easily disturbed, often experiencing some anxiety around sleep itself. Despite disrupted sleep, Dolphins are frequently highly intelligent, detail-oriented and creative, especially late at night.
Why This Matters
Fighting your chronotype — forcing a Wolf into an early routine, or expecting a Lion to socialise late — creates chronic low-grade friction that compounds over time.
